Advocate’s Close Up For Andrew Doolan Prize

Posted on August 6, 2014 by admin

Following the success of winning a prestigious RIAS Award earlier this summer, Advocate’s Close has now been put forward for both the RIAS Gold Medal and the Andrew Doolan prize, the UK’s most valuable architectural prize that recognises the best building in Scotland.

In their assessment of the project, the RIAS commented that Advocate’s Close is “Urban weaving at its most complex, connected into the existing patterns of Edinburgh’s upper Old Town, the project connects refurbished historic properties with new-build. A substantial mixed development, full of interest”.

To be shortlisted for both accolades marks an unprecedented success and a major milestone for Morgan McDonnell. Prior to 2014, the practice had never had a project shortlisted for an RIAS Award, but this year were one of only 3 Scottish practices to have at least 2 projects in the running (Advocate’s Close & 26-31 Charlotte Square).  The Doolan Prize judges are set to visit the project later this month, with the winner being announced at a ceremony in November.
