the residential units comprise two independent glass and steel “boxes” which are positioned within the single volume space of the old power house.  these elements sit below the original industrial roof trusses and are pushed towards the east and west internal elevations, leaving the existing cast iron central tiered column structure as the main focus of a central atrium space.

the independent structuring of these new contemporary interventions allows the existing ornate brick facades to remain intact whilst the crisp material language references the industrial aesthetic of the massive cable engines which the space was designed to hold.  an enclosed stair clad in stainless steel sits in the newly created external space between the two listed buildings.  the form of this elements is derived from that of the tram carcasses which were built and maintained on the site.  it feeds a network of suspended bridges which again reference the historic precedent of the suspended maintenance access walkways.
