to the rear of the building on calton road, a six storey steel framed extension is being erected, allowing an extra three flats per floor. floor to ceiling glazing opens up these exclusive apartments, and fixed louvre screens provide protective barriers in front of full height opening lights for ventilation. the combination of tinted glass, strongly defined fenestration and louvre screens suggests intimacy and individuality, even right in edinburgh’s urban heart. in contrast, the east façade has a much more private and peaceful aspect as it overlooks the cemetery, fitted with projecting window boxes which break the monolithic line of the building and respond to the three dimensional play of the tombs and monuments below.
